Android is a generic operating system which is mostly used in mobile handsets (smartphones) and some tablet devices. Currently, Android seems to take over the mobile world, but competition with iOS (Apple) is hard, and there is still Nokia’s Maemo/MeeGo lurking behind.

Anyone can develop Android software and put it in AndroidMarket.
