Installing Ubuntu software without network (off-line)

Nowadays many users have only 3G Internet connection. As we have seen, 3G modems can be quite tricky in Linux, and it is possible that you have a 3G modem that does not work since you have not latest version of some package installed. In order to get it work you should install these packages … Continue reading

Samsung Galaxy S and Linux: mass storage, tethering and synchronization

I found on certain web-page some totally misleading instructions on how to connect Samsung Galaxy to Linux PC. There they stated that you have to activate USB Debugging to connect Galaxy to Linux PC and transfer files. This is not correct. WARNING! Do not activate USB debugging unless you are coding and debugging Android software … Continue reading

Alienating (X/K)Ubuntu

I have really liked Ubuntu for years. I started using Linux with Slackware back during the 90’s, went through Red Hat, SuSE, Debian, Gentoo and various other distros. 3G Modems in Kubuntu Lucid

This is ridiculous, something that worked well in Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.04, breaks more and more, version by version. I mean, you could assume … Continue reading

Got it!

OK. Got this E160E work again as it should. In Kubuntu 9.10, and 9.04 it had worked reliably and configuration was easy. But in 10.04 problems appeared. It worked only if it was plugged in when machine was booted. Well I noticed that the file /lib/udev/rules.d/61-option-modem-modeswitch.rules had no entry for E160E so I added there … Continue reading

3G modems, lots of suspense and surprises

When you are using only 3G modems, your life is never dull. Sometimes they work like charm… and sometimes its like nightmare. Actually the word “charm” is quite correct. They are like some magic talismans or spells. Everything seems to depend on the positions of stars, phase of Moon, sunspot activity, and other connected items. … Continue reading
