Samsung Galaxy – Wallpapers

There are lots of ready-made wallpapers available on internet for Samsung Galaxy S, but they are really easy to make yourself. These instructions are for normal, static wallpapers, not the animated ones.

Take any picture you like, and either resize or crop it to size 980 (width) x 800 (height). If the original picture almost similar aspect ratio, you can just resize it without too much distortion. E.g if original picture pixel size is about 1500 x 1200, 2000 x 1600, 3000 x 2400, you can just resize it to this size. If there is too much difference in width/length aspect ratio, you can resize it, but the result will be a distorted image, which might not be pleasant to look at.

All modern image processing applications have image resizing funtion. Just look through the menus. In Ubuntu I suggest you install GIMP. Open you original image, and then from menu Image choose the entry Scale Image. This open a window where you can give new width and height. Notice the small “chain” linking width and height. By clicking it it will change into open or closed. If it is closed (default) then scaling will keep the aspect ratio of original image. This means that you can choose freely only one of dimensions. If it is open then you can choose freely both dimensions. Do not worry about other parameters. Press button Scale, and then save the picture as PNG image.

If you want to use only certain part of original image, then you need to use cropping tool and also scale image, if your original image is very large in pixel size. If you are not familiar with GIMP Toolbox icons, you can choose Crop tool from Tools menu. Navigate to submenu Transform Tools and press Crop. Alternatively you could just press Shift+C. When activated you can select an area from picture. You can change the size of the selected area to cover everything you want to have in picture. When you are satisfied, click the center region of selected area and everything that is outside of selected area will be cropped away and picture is resized.

Notice that the resulting picture is wider than the screen of Galaxy S itself. This is necessary for sliding effect of multiple desktops. You could crop the picture with the application provided with Galaxy S, but it is easier to do on PC.

Now transfer the picture to phone using either USB (Mass Storage mode) or Bluetooth. Open Gallery application in Galaxy, look for the picture and open it. Press Menu, then More and the Set As, and then Wallpaper. Picture is opened in mode where you can crop it to proper size. If the picture is already 980×800 then extend the cropping window to cover whole picture. Press Save and you should now have new wallpaper.
