Nokia BH-905i Bluetooth headset

Nokia BH-905i

A bit of luxury item, perhaps, but Nokia BH-905i Bluetooth stereo headset has many advantages. It is stereo headphones, hands-free, VoIP headset and active noise canceling system in one stylish and lightweight package.

Structure, feel and packaging
BH-905i is lightweight although it carries battery inside it. Both earpieces rotate for easy storage. Headset and its accessories are packed inside sturdy leather case, where there is slot for headset and a multi-pocket leather pouch with room for charger, all cables and adapters. This keeps everything neatly in one place and protects your valuable headset.

Wearing BH-905i is a comfortable experience due to their light weight and structure. All control buttons are easy to use even though you cannot actually see them, when you are wearing the headset.

Connections
BH-905i can be used with Bluetooth (2.1 with EDR) and audio cables. It comes with several connection cables, extension cable, and connector adapters. There is even a VoIP adapter. This means that you can use BH-905i with cellphones, media players, stereo system, TV, car and airplane audio system etc.

Music
Audio quality in this headset is amazing, especially with active noise canceling (ANC) on. You can hear even small nuances that you might miss when listening music from speakers. When headset is used with Bluetooth, you can activate bass boost and stereo widening effects if your music stream support them.

Noise canceling
Active noise canceling improves listening experience enormously. Since almost all (99%) background noise is cancelled you do not have to listen music as loud as with normal earphones. Or you do not have listen anything, just enjoy the relaxing silence.

Battery
With BH-905i you can easily listen music for 16-17 hours using bluetooth with ANC on. With ANC off, this increases to 24 hours. When using audio cables you can listen music for 40 hours with ANC on. I tested this so that I had a fully charged headset, which I used for two days at work (continuous play for 7 hours each day), and then for two days at home (approximately 2 hours each day), not recharging it any way during that time. I used Bluetooth and ANC all the time. On the fourth day it started to beep and warn about low battery. Charging time is approximately 2 hours.

Bluetooth reception
It was a pleasant surprise to find out that BH-905i really has that 10 meter reception range if nothing is blocking the line of sight. While some other headsets start to lose connection when couple of meters away, this is not the case with BH-905i. So, you really can move around at home while listening the music.

Overall
BH-905i is quite expensive headset, but due to it comfortable structure, good noise canceling and long battery life, I think it is worth it. Especially, if you love to listen music.

I just got my bh905i. I couldn’t wait to get it actually. Sadly, I’m not sure I’m that impressed. It makes this annoying flapping sound when you’re in a moving vehicle with the windows wound down. I actually prefer the bh 504 model or even the earpiece that came with my n8. Furthermore, the volume is not loud enough.

I have noticed similar “flapping” sound while walking. My guess is that these are not actually designed for outdoors use, but primarily for indoors use. I am quite satisfied how these cancel all kinds of noise in office environment and noisy humming of servers.

What I have discovered is that noise canceling has a slight delay which means that sudden noises may get through.

Loudness is a matter of taste, but at least for me volume is loud enough. Actually I enjoy using these because I do not have to listen music too loud (which may damage your hearing). While using these I have discovered tunes I did not hear when using normal speaker set.

Hey, since you have actually seen these headsets. I would like to ask a question.

When being used for audio via bluetooth do the headphones pick up my voice and transmit it back to my PC via bluetooth or do you have to use the voip adapter and have a wired connection for voip?

I am not sure what the voip adapter is for?

    Thanks

      Both are possible.

      VoIP Adapter
You can use voip adapter which you should connect to computers audio out and microphone/audio in connectors. Then you connect the headset to voip adapter with audio cable. This is explained in the manual of BH-905i. Then follow according to instructions for your VoIP application This should work on any pc,

      Bluetooth (Ubuntu 11.04)
When you have paired BH-905i with your computer, you can use it either to listen stereo music or use it as VoIP headset. Go to sound preferences and select Hardware tab. You should see Nokia BH-905i on the list. Click it. Beneath the list the is a select box “Settings for the selected device”.

If you want to listen music then select “High Fidelity Playback (A2DP)”. You will see that now BH-905i is listed having 1 Output on the list.

If you want to use for VoIP then select “Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP)”. When that option is selected, you will see that BH-905i is listed having “1 Output/1 Input”. After this you should select Input tab and activate BH-905i as a device for sound input. You can check and see if audio in works with input level meters. After this select Output tab, and check BH-905i as a device for sound output (unless it already is). Now it should work, but this may depend according to VoIP application in use.
